Dr Dylan Esler is a British-Belgian scholar and translator of Tibetan Buddhist texts. He holds a PhD from the University of Louvain and an MA in Buddhist Studies from SOAS, University of London. He works for 84000, an organization devoted to the translation into English of the Tibetan Buddhist canon. Previously, Dr Esler worked as a researcher at the Center for Religious Studies (CERES) at Ruhr University Bochum. He is affiliated with the Oriental Institute of Louvain (CIOL), where he has twice held the Satsuma Chair, and has also taught at Inalco in Paris.

He spent several years living in Sarnath, India, deepening his knowledge of Tibetan and Sanskrit and studying tantric religious practice. Dr Esler’s research focuses on early Nyingma expositions of Dzogchen and Tantra. His publications include an annotated translation of Nubchen Sangye Yeshe’s seminal treatise on contemplation, The Lamp for the Eye of Contemplation (Oxford University Press, 2022), and a study of Nubchen’s Dzogchen commentaries, Effortless Spontaneity (Brill, 2023). Most recently, his translation of the root tantra of Anuyoga, The Sūtra of All-Embracing Awareness, was published by the 84000 project in 2026.
