Cuckoo of Instant Presence and Guru-Yoga

There’s a category of root texts which is called “lung” in Tibetan or agama in Sanskrit. Lungs are concise texts concentrated on the essential meaning. One of the most important lungs is called “Six Vajra Verses” or “The Cuckoo of Instant Presence”. It was the very first text translated into Tibetan, translated by Vairocana.

«The nature of variety is nondual,

Yet each single part, in its very state, is beyond mental constructs.

The “condition as it is” is not conceived of,

Yet its manifestation as form is always good.

Being already accomplished, the illness of effort is abandoned:

Abiding in spontaneous perfection is contemplation.»

(From The Cuckoo of Rigpa by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, translated by Adriano Clemente)

Such texts might seem very abstract and philosophical, therefore a question might arise: what should we do to practice? The thing is that Dzogchen teaching is not about “doing”, it’s about “knowing”. The principle of Dzogchen teaching is to be in the state of knowledge rather that applying certain actions of body, voice, and mind. Even though we say that we DO Guru-yoga, the most important part of it is not making a sound or visualizing, but refreshing our knowledge and then relaxing in that state.

In this retreat we’ll study “Six Vajra Verses” in connection to the essential Ati Guru-Yoga, so that its verses could become guidelines for our practice, disclosing the principle of contemplation. The retreat is intended for Dzogchen practitioners who received the transmission of Guru-Yoga from Chogyal Namkhai Norbu or Namkhai Yeshi.
